01. Jon Meets Amy
In this episode, Jon and Amy meet at the video store. Jon asks Amy for movie recommendations and then asks for her phone number.
Everyday Idioms 1 is the ongoing story of Jon and Amy told through 20 short English dialogues. Each lesson introduces 10 expressions (idioms, phrasal verbs, etc.) and features an audio recording, a comprehension task, vocabulary development tasks, and a shuffled dialogue activity.

Warm Up

- Do you ask other people for their movie recommendations?
- What kind of movies do you like? Why?

Amy: Yes?
Jon: I want to rent a movie for tonight. Do you have any recommendations?
Amy: Sure! What kind of movies are you into?
Jon: I’m not choosy.
Amy: Well, I really liked the Indiana Jones movie.
Jon: How was it?
Amy: It was a blockbuster! It has some of everything: comedy, drama, and a lot of action.
Jon: Sounds like a winner. Wasn’t there more than one Indiana Jones movie? Which one should I check out first?
Amy: There were four movies, actually. Start from scratch. Rent the first one tonight.
Jon: Great. Hey, any other recommendations? I have time for two movies and you know your stuff.
Amy: Thanks. I keep up with the new movies. Do you like drama?
Jon: Sometimes. Why? What do you recommend?
Amy: I’d try Million Dollar Baby. A lot of people liked it. It won the Academy Award.
Jon: Sounds great. Hey, can I give you a ring later? I’m Jon.
Amy: Sure. I love talking about movies. My name is Amy. Here’s my number.

Exercise C - Writing
- Write a letter or an email addressed to a friend.
- The main topic should be recommending movies that you have recently watched.
- Incorporate the following vocabulary words and phrases we have learned in class:
- “be choosy”
- “have a sec”
- “blockbuster”
- “winner”
- “check out”
- “start from scratch”
- “know one’s stuff”
- “keep up with”
- “be into”
- “give someone a ring”
4. Be creative and aim to use as many vocabulary words as possible.
5. Maintain a friendly and informal tone as if you are talking to a close friend.
6. Check your writing for correct grammar and spelling before submission.
7. Submit your work by the due date.
Dear Alex,
I hope you’re doing well! I decided to write you a quick email because I know you’ve been in the mood for some movies recently and I have a sec to share my thoughts.
You know me, I’m not choosy when it comes to films, but I have seen some winners lately. The first one I wanted to recommend is the first Indiana Jones movie. It’s an old one but a total blockbuster. It’s got a little bit of everything: drama, action, comedy – it’s pretty much got it all. So, if you haven’t checked it out already, start from scratch with this one!
The other one that I found really engaging is ‘Million Dollar Baby’. I keep up with new films too and this one won an Academy Award. It’s a drama and it really had me on the edge of my seat.
